A special moment of every season: the very first flower of the year! And this year the winner is Sunspots. Very likely Ipomoea coccinea but I aqcuired it as Ipomoea hederifolia.

As is often the case early in the season the flower is not perfect and quite small in size. Nights have been cold, the plant is still small and it seems like this species is an aphid magnet. The flowers will become larger and better looking with time.

I'm very excited to grow this species for the first time (as it turns out one i didn't even know I had in the collection). Small flowered Ipomoea species don't always get the attention they deserve.
