20/05/2019 - A Small Setback

Updated: May 21, 2019

This update took a bit longer than planned because of a small setback. As you may have seen from our previous blog post the plants were growing and blooming well. At that time the weather outside also picked up and we decided to risk it and move the plants from the indoor space to outdoors so we could make room for germinating new batches and vegetable plants.

Blue Striated Ray Flow

The nice weather did not last very long however and since then it has been an unusually cold and grey spring so far. Due to having a very busy period outside of the vineyard and lack of room indoors the plants didn't get moved indoors overnight during the colder days. The small plants did not cope with the cold night temperatures very well and in combination with the rain developed an aggressive fungal disease.

Pink Porcelain Blizzard

The weather is finally getting warmer again but about a third of the plants has died off and the rest is looking very shabby and we doubt it is worth the effort to try and rehabilitate them. The fact they are in their flowering phase makes this even less likely.

Baby Blue Ray dubbed Gray Ray

This was a calculated risk. However since our light deprivation experiments turned out so well and we started very early in the season we have plenty of time to start new batches of seed to get things going again. Using the "12/12 from seed" technique we can get new plants flowering in 5 to 6 weeks.

We still got some very nice pictures before the plants started deteriorating and in the meantime we have put some effort in preparing the vegetable garden for this season.

Today we'll be starting a new batch of 24 Ipomoea nil varieties as well as some Ipomoea purpurea. Another batch of 24 will follow in about two weeks time.
